Who is accountable for tracking the remaining work in the Sprint Backlog?

The Development Team is accountable for tracking the remaining work in the Sprint Backlog because they are the individuals directly involved in executing the work during the Sprint. They have the most intimate knowledge of the tasks being undertaken and the progress being made towards completing the Sprint Goal.

By managing the Sprint Backlog, the Development Team not only keeps an up-to-date record of what remains to be done but also facilitates effective collaboration, prioritization, and adaptation throughout the Sprint. This transparency helps them assess their work and make adjustments as needed, enabling them to deliver a potentially releasable increment of the product by the end of the Sprint.

While the other roles in Scrum, such as the Scrum Master and Product Owner, play significant parts in the overall process and can influence or support the Development Team, the responsibility for the Sprint Backlog and its progress rests solely with the Development Team. Stakeholders are typically external to the Scrum Team and contribute their insights and needs, but they do not track work completion in the Sprint Backlog.
